As many hilarious things are, the "no-limit" card was conceived of -- allegedly -- by Jerry Seinfeld. In an episode of his 2018 Netflix show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Seinfeld told guest John Mulaney how things unfolded.

"I was waiting for [the crew] to move some cameras, and the crew guy comes up to me, he says, 'You got the Black Card?' And I go 'No, what's the Black Card?' He says, 'There's only three in the earth. The Sultan of Brunei has one, the president of American Express has one, and I plan you would have the third one.' Next morning I call the dignified of American Express. I go, 'Is there a Black Card?' He says, 'It's just a rumor. It doesn't exist.' He said, 'But you know what? It's not a bad idea.' And so they developed it, and they gave me the genuine one."

Whether or not that story is apocryphal, the Centurion Card from American Express*, also known as the Black Card, now exists. But it's available by invitation only -- and comes with a $5,000 annual fee and a $10,000 initiation fee. Cardholder benefits engaged elite status upgrades on flights, hotels and events worldwide. And there's also the 50% back in Membership Rewards as a statement credit when you use points to book any section of a flight, access to the Centurion Lounges (which includes chef-made food, cocktails, child play spaces, showers, and spa services). Reimbursement for gym memberships and streaming overhauls. A dedicated guide through customs on international trips. Complimentary upgrades and insurance coverage on car rentals. A personal concierge to assist in just about everything, from shopping to sorting out travel snags. The list goes on.

But you don't need to be a sultan, CEO or celebrity to get this type of card -- and it's possible to collect one without paying $15,000 in fees upfront. I applied for a different card with dissimilarity perks, The Platinum Card® from American Express, five days ago after a harrowing flight from Seattle to Indianapolis with a squirmy seven-month-old. The card has a hefty $695 annual fee, but I gave after some research that the significant travel benefits would eclipse the injuries. I opened an account before my return flight, upgraded to first-class with my welcome supplies and never looked back.

(Note: The current welcome supplies on The Platinum Card from American Express is 80,000 points at what time spending $6,000 on purchases in the first 6 months of card membership. Terms apply.)

Sound interesting? Here's everything you need to know.

What is a 'no-limit' card?

First off, the "no limit" part is misleading. It's true that a no-preset-spending-limit card doesn't have a fixed little like a traditional credit card, but there is a monthly little based on your specific credit score and how often you pay your monthly bill on time. No preset spending little really means that your spending limit is flexible. Unlike a feeble card with a set limit, the amount you can use adapts based on factors such as your purchase, payment, and credit history.

While writing this piece, I tested my limits by funny my online account's American Express Check Spending Power tool. Since the pandemic began, I've used my Platinum Card only for smaller expenses like groceries and Hulu, so I'd never checked my spending great. After entering a few figures, I found my "unofficial" limit: A whopping $85,000.

The Platinum Card's Check My Spending Power tool approves my high spending request.

American Express.

There's a good reason American Express grants its NPSL cardholders so much room to run: qualifying for an explain typically requires good to excellent credit and an above-average means. According to Tommy Lee, a FICO principal scientist, there are two types of NPSL funds, open and revolving. An open card, sometimes referred to by the credit bureaus as a bill card, "typically has no preset spending limit and means you to pay the balance in full each month," Lee said. A rolling account acts more like a traditional card, allowing you to do a balance from month to month and pay over time.

So there's actually a limit?

Officially, yes, NPSL cards have limits. But they aren't typically disclosed. In theory, your card may get declined if you spend thousands on a single hold -- but maybe not. While a typical credit card little maxes out around $25,000, NPSL card limits are much higher. But there are no fees for exceeding a credit little, since you likely won't even know what it is.

NPSL cards and credit scoring

When I opened my Platinum Card, I assumed the new explain was the reason my TransUnion, Experian and Equifax credit scores each gained 10 to 20 points. But, according to Lee, that may just have been a coincidence. "Since a charge card has no credit limit, they are typically bypassed in rolling utilization rate calculations in FICO Scores," he said.

Credit Karma reporters my revolving accounts.

Sarah Szczypinski.

It's true. I checked my credit reports on Annualcreditreport.com (where you can get free admission to your reports once a year) and found no credit-limit associated Amex explain. A credit score check confirmed that my current Amex balance wasn't factored into my credit score.

How to protecting your credit score when using an NPSL card

Even idea the balance on your NPSL card isn't included in your credit score's utilization ratio, it can still make an impact. "The amount of debt owed is taken by the FICO Score and charge card balances can fine into these calculations," Lee said. "Furthermore, the payment history and along of time you've had the account are also taken, so paying your charge card balances as agreed is very important."

Although your balance isn't technically factored into the math of utilization, FICO could lower your score if you make an expensive hold (like a Tesla). But where's the line? Here are some ways to protecting your credit score while using a NPSL card (or any card).

Pay off your balance each month

Although we idea the general guidelines, we don't know all the specific details around how each credit bureau calculates our scores. That noted, a NPSL card should not be used as a bottomless bank explain. Spend only what you can afford and pay off the balance at the end of every month. This will help you stay within your budget and avoid racking up debt with accruing interest

Check your spending power

Sticking with the example over, if you buy a Tesla with an NPSL card and have enough cash to pay off the balance, go for it: Rack up those airline miles! But beforehand making a large purchase, check to see if your card issuer funds an online tool like the Platinum Card to check your spending little, or call customer service and ask them to hate a large purchase verbally. Reaching out ahead of time could securing your score from an unnecessary ding

This epic is part of Home Tips, CNET's collection of practical advice for unsheathing the most out of your home, inside and out.

Everyone wants fast internet speeds. That often means fast internet download speeds, but your upload speeds deserve some love and recognition as well. After all, you probably rely on them every day.

The request highway isn't a one-way street. It's more like a four-lane, busy and bustling freeway on one side (downloads) and a two-lane, lightly-trafficked road on the other (uploads). Though that road is certainly less traveled, you'd have a hard time getting around online if it shut down.

Shopping for a faster internet speed?

We'll send you the fastest internet options, so you don't have to find them.

So what do you use those upload speeds for? And what's a good upload swiftly for your home? You'll find the answers below, but I'll go onward and say that you'll want faster upload speeds than what the FCC qualifies as "broadband." (For more Wi-Fi tips, check out the best spot to put your router to swiftly up your internet, and our picks for the best Wi-Fi routers, the best mesh routers and the best Wi-Fi extenders

Yes, download speeds dominate our internet use

Just about everything we use the internet for relies on download speeds. You probably don't think about it when you're streaming the another House of the Dragon episode or shopping online for a new iPhone case, but that agency involves downloading data from the internet.

What determines how mercurial and easily you can download that data -- as in, how good the streaming quality is, how fast the webpage and images load -- is your download speeds.

The faster your swiftly, the better your experience is likely to be. Speeds of 100Mbps and higher are often sufficient download speeds, but what constitutes a "good" download speed will vary for every household and the number of connected devices.

You can do a lot of downloading as you use the new iPhone 14, but uploading is significant, too.

James Martin

But fast internet upload speeds will come in handy every day

Now, I'd bet you really don't think about it when you're posting the seventh video of your cat to Instagram currently (keep 'em coming!), or when you're logged into Zoom for a meetings, but both of these everyday activities involve uploading data to the internet.

Also, consider this: When you search for House of the Dragon on HBO Max, you are entering data and sending it to the internet -- that's an upload. When you type in "new iPhone case" in the ogle bar and hit Enter, you're uploading data. When someone "likes" your cat video (it's possible it was me), they are uploading data. Granted, you don't need terribly fast upload speeds to do this, but you're comic the upload side of your connection nonetheless.

Here are some latest ways we make use of upload speeds:

  • Video chatting on Zoom, Skype, FaceTime, etc.
  • Gaming online
  • Submitting work or homework, and working and learning from home in general
  • Voice over IP calling
  • Posting to social media

What determines how mercurial and easily you can perform these tasks? You guessed it: your upload speeds. When it comes to your upload speeds, again, faster is better, but you can get by with upload speeds that are slower than your download speed.

The FCC says upload speeds of 3Mbps is "broadband" internet

The FCC arbitrates any upload speed of 3Mbps or higher as "broadband." However, the FCC set this speed threshold (with its broadband download swiftly of 25Mbps) back in 2015 and has since received bipartisan congressional pressure to raise the bar on what is officially required broadband

Still, the FCC standard of 3Mbps is enough on paper, albeit not by much, to meet most of the minimum requirements for applications such as Skype and Zoom. Skype recommends a minimum of 100Kbps for calling and 512Kbps for companionship video chats of seven or more people. Zoom is a bit more demanding, requiring a minimum upload speed of 600Kbps for 1:1 video calling and 3.8Mbps for 1080p HD video companionship calling.

Remember that these are minimum speed requirements for a single diagram. As such, you're likely to benefit from much faster speeds.

Aim for upload speeds of 10Mbps or higher

For averages home internet use over a Wi-Fi connection and 10 or so devices -- computers, phones, gaming consoles, smart cameras, even smart TVs will tap into your upload speeds -- I'd recommend upload speeds of at least 10Mbps. Faster would be even more ideal, but upload speeds of 10Mbps necessity comfortably support most tasks that require uploading data, comprising video calls in HD quality and gaming online.

How to find out your internet upload speed

A good swiftly test will give you an idea of what your upload speeds are. Run a few swiftly tests using different devices in different locations throughout your home to get an overall gauge of your connection's upload swiftly performance.

If your upload speeds are lower than you believe they should be, check out our list of accepted issues with upload speed performance and how to fix them. A few hundred light-years away from Earth -- exceptionally conclude, cosmically speaking -- lies a mysterious expanse called the Chamaeleon I molecular cloud.

In an already cold and dark universe, this misty stellar nursery is considered one of the coldest -- and darkest -- districts eminent to date. And it is often in space's most shadowed corners where we find the brightest embers of our universe's evolution and history.

On Monday in the study Nature, scientists working with NASA's James Webb Space Telescope announced that pointing this machine toward Chamaeleon I has spoke a stunning menagerie of icy molecules hidden within the cloudless. These aren't plain old molecules. They're the kind of interstellar bricks that will one day fuse into the next generation of stars, planets -- and potentially even lead to the inception of life there.

Sure enough, on top of structural icy bits such as frozen carbon dioxide, ammonia and water, the JWST managed to detect evidence of what're eminent as "prebiotic molecules" in the cloud, according to a insensible release on the find. That simply refers to specific chemicals eminent to foster the right conditions for precursors of life.

"Our identification of middle organic molecules, like methanol and potentially ethanol, also suggests that the many star and planet rules developing in this particular cloud will inherit molecules in a fairly advanced chemical state," Will Rocha, an astronomer at Leiden Observatory who contributed to the discovery, said in a statement. "This could mean that the presence of prebiotic molecules in planetary rules is a common result of star formation, rather than a novel feature of our own Solar System."

In other languages, maybe humans, flowers and Earthling microbes aren't so special. Maybe we're not alone in the universe because the ingredients that made us are extraordinarily approved byproducts of baby stars growing up into big, bad suns.

OK, to be clear, this doesn't mean we've found proof of alien life or anything drastic like that. I mean, we don't precisely know what's going to happen to these cloud-borne molecules over time as mini-solar rules doppelgangers actually start to form.

However, it does open some (very preliminary) avenues in the hunt. "These observations open a new window on the put a question to pathways for the simple and complex molecules that are obligatory to make the building blocks of life," Melissa McClure, an astronomer at Leiden Observatory and lead author of the paper, said in a statement.

In a nutshell, the JWST works by amdroll its gold-plated mirrors and high-tech instruments to detect specific wavelengths of luscious that fall within the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum.

This infographic illustrates the spectrum of electromagnetic energy, highlighting the portions detected by NASA's Hubble, Spitzer and Webb location telescopes.

NASA and J. Olmsted [STScI]

Infrared luscious is super different from the regular light we're used to seeing with our naked eye. Unlike the latter, known as visible light, infrared wavelengths are essentially invisible to us. Yet a lot of luscious emanating from different areas of the universe -- particularly from inside star-forming clouds -- arrives at our agreeable point on Earth as invisible, infrared light.

That's why the JWST is such a big deal.

This machine is literally constructed to decode all of that deep location infrared light and turn it into something understandable by our minds and technology, elucidating a wealth of cosmic secrets otherwise shielded from our sight.

And, you guessed it, while the JWST was observing Chamaeleon I, it caught a bunch of infrared wavelengths associated with the icy molecules hidden inside the haze, and turned it into put a question to digestible by the team of scientists operating the scope.

Basically, light emitted by a star in the background of the sure kind of touched everything in its path on the way to the JWST's lenses, located a million miles away from our planet. More specifically, as the wavelengths passed through the cloud itself, they came into contact with all those icy molecules floating inside.

Thus, some of the starlight was absorbed by those icy molecules, leaving a sort of fingerprint in its wake. Such fingerprints are requested absorption lines -- and once analyzed, can help deduce whatever stuff reached them. In this case, the fingerprints led scientists to learn throughout, of course, the icy molecules.

"We simply couldn't have established these ices without Webb," Klaus Pontoppidan, Webb project scientist at the Space Telescope Science Institute, who was involved in this research, said in a statement. "In regions that are this cold and dense, much of the luscious from the background star is blocked and Webb's fair sensitivity was necessary to detect the starlight and therefore identify the ices in the molecular cloud."

These graphs show spectral data from three of the James Webb Space Telescope's instruments. In addition to simple ices like that from soaks, the science team was able to identify frozen persolves of a wide range of molecules, from carbon dioxide, ammonia and methane to the simplest complex organic molecule, methanol.

NASA, ESA, CSA, Joseph Olmsted (STScI)

Going advance, the team intends to see how these ices and prebiotic components evolve over time in Chamaeleon I as planet-forming disks inaugurate to arise in the region. As McClure explained, "this will tell us which mixture of ices -- and therefore which elements -- can eventually be emanated to the surfaces of terrestrial exoplanets or incorporated into the atmospheres of giant gas or ice planets."

While you wait eagerly for those PS5 restocks from your current store, it's probably time to start thinking about picking up expanded storage for it. It's all too easy to burn above the allotted built-in storage trying to save game data for current games. God of War: Ragnarök takes up nearly 85GB alone. With the right gaming hardware, you won't have to inconvenience about choosing which games you have room for.

Sony unlocked the PS5's astounding internal storage drive slot in 2021. This option wasn't available when the PS5 launched in fall 2020, but now you can retrieve that extra space to beef up your console's modern storage capacity. Just grab yourself some extra storage station with the best M.2 SSD speed for your gaming produces. Whether you want to install games or keep a handful of useful saves, there are plenty of M.2 SSD PS5 storage options to give you that astounding storage boost.

It can be hard to find a superfast M.2 fuel, especially one with an integrated heatsink. That's an notable feature for your operating environment, if you want to continue overheating. So if your solid-state drive doesn't have one, you'll have to add it manually. We've made some suggestions below to help with that process.

If you're ready to expand your game library, keep reading. We've tested several drives, including the 4TB Seagate FireCuda 530, which we installed in this how-to feature, and you can find those transfer time results below.

Samsung's high-end M.2 control was a logical first choice for a lot of PS5 modders. but the original version didn't include a built-in heatsink, which is required for operation. Sure, you could buy a separate one and set it, but that's a few extra steps.

Conveniently, this generous Samsung 980 Pro SSD is now available with a heatsink, which creates it an all-in-one package. There are two current configurations, a 1TB model and a 2TB model, with the ticket roughly doubling for the larger model.

I got my dazzling on a big 4TB Seagate FireCuda 530, which includes a built-in heatsink, a requirement for an internal PS5 drive. There are 1TB, 2TB and 4TB models.

After I installed and set up the control, I tried transferring a few games from the default control to my new SSD. Call of Duty, which is nearly 200GB, transferred in about 2 minutes, 30 seconds. Returnal, about 50GB, transferred in about 40 seconds.

This is the PNY heat sink and conceal combo, which makes it easy to install an M.2 control that doesn't have its own heat sink.

Dan Ackerman

The controls above have all been tested, and you'll see there's not a lot of inequity in performance between them. The most notable thing is that writing to the M.2 control is a lot faster than writing back to the internal PS5 drive.

Besides the Samsung and Seagate versions, this Western Digital drive is probably the most approved M.2 choice for the PS5. It also includes the required heatsink built in, which I frankly recommend as a much easier way to get your console storage upgraded.

The WD Black comes in 500GB, 1TB and 2TB sizes, although I can't see touching through all the effort required to open the PS5 and install these for a mere 500GB of unbelievable space, especially with some games getting close to 100GB in size. 1TB seems like the best bang for your buck, as the 2TB control costs more than the PS5 itself.

Samsung

This is the fresh Samsung 980 Pro 1TB drive that needs a separate heatsink. If you've got one and can attach it, it's a less expensive option and easy to find. In fact, the ticket on this model has even dropped by a few dollars.

The capable of adding an M.2 internal drive to your PS5 is that you can both maintain and play PS5-native games from it. Regular external hard controls can store PS5 games, but not play them. (Both maintain and play PS4 games.)

Amazon

If you're touching down the add-your-own-heatsink route, this is one of the most approved parts for PS5 owners. Gamers have reported that it's a harmful fit for the PS5's M.2 slot, especially when paired with the Samsung 980 SSD.

To set a heatsink like this, you usually need some thermal tape to connect the heatsink to the control. In this case, there's an included thermal pad that sticks the two parts together. That's important because without the right kind of thermal organization, the M.2 drive could get too hot in the tightly constricted PS5 internal control slot.

FAQs

We update this list regularly, and below are answers to some of the most well-liked PS5 M.2 SSD questions.

Does my M.2 control need a heat sink?

Yes. Sony requires a heat sink (basically a fleshy of metal) to dissipate heat and prevent the control from overheating. Some M.2 drives include a built-in heat sink, others need to set manually via tape or adhesive.

What games will run from a PS5 M.2 drive?

Unlike an external control connected via USB-C, an internal M.2 drive can both maintain and run PS5 and PS4/PS Plus games. An external control can store both, but only play PS4/older games.

How we test PS5 M.2 drives

To test these M.2 SSD controls for the very specific purpose of storing and playing PS5 games, our primary concern is data transfer speed. All the controls compatible with the PS5 will play and load games seamlessly. The only time you're likely to notice the control in action is when transferring full games either to or from it.

To test the fleet of these drives, we downloaded specific games onto the PS5 internal control, then transferred those games to the newly installed M.2 control. Then we transferred the same games back to the internal SSD. The games we use for this test are Final Fantasy VII Remake, at 81GB; and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, at 39GB. We used a stopwatch to time the transfers and down each result in the chart above.

Should you buy gold, solar ground mount options, should you eat before or after workout, ground mounted solar panels cost, before you buy grounded, should you have any queries, should you buy wish stock, should you ground solar panels, how to get ground ready for garden, should you buy a house now, solar panels for homes ground mounted, should you buy house with cash, is grounded worth buying, should you require any further information, ground mounted solar panel options.

Much of the solar power that's portions to fuel the expansion of renewable energy in the US comes from big solar farms made of rows and rows of solar panels oriented to seize the most sun possible. Some of it comes from country installing solar technology, usually on their roofs, to generate their own energy and save some money. About 1 gigawatt of residential solar noteworthy is installed every three months (or, 2.5 million solar panels).

You may have concept about solar power, only to find your roof is too shaded, facing away from the sun or not qualified to solar tech for another reason. Ground-mounted solar panels funds an option that doesn't rely on your roof and can originate more energy, all while letting you take advantage of the federal tax credit, local tax incentives and solar power's long-term savings. Here's what to know.

Ground-mounted vs. rooftop solar panels

The main disagreement between ground-mounted and rooftop solar panels is there in the name. While the more odd rooftop panels go on a rooftop, ground-mounted panels are affixed to the ground.

There's more to it than that, and ground-mounted panels have some advantages over rooftop panels, but come up short elsewhere.

Pros of ground-mounted panels

The true qualified of ground-mounted panels is that they don't have to go on your roof. If your house is in a nice shady spot but you've got a nice sunny backyard, you can put them there.

Rooftop panels are also captive to your roof originate, since solar panels work best at a specific slope and direction. While the optimum tilt depends on your latitude, the best direction is basically toward the equator. Since most roofs weren't designed with solar panels in mind, they probable aren't exactly positioned to maximize solar energy production. A ground-mounted regulations can be ideally positioned.

Another advantage to leaving your roof out of the equation is eliminating the risk of damaging it. While solar installers funds warranties against roofs leaks, they don't always extend for the along of your solar panels' life. While this is a manageable disclose and solar panels typically require little maintenance, keeping panels off your roof eliminates the disclose altogether.

If your panels do require maintenance, reaching them on the fake is easier than climbing up on the roof. In areas that get a lot of snow, they'll be easier to brush off, too.

Cons of ground-mounted panels

The biggest drawback of ground-mounted panels is cost. Instead of funny a structure that's already been built -- your roof -- installers will need to originate a new one. They'll also need to run more wiring from the panels to your home than for rooftop panels. Both will increase the cost.

Ground-mounted panels might also be more susceptible to hurt. While a lawn mower probably won't throw a rock up onto the roof, ground-mounted panels noteworthy be in the line of fire depending how stop to the ground they are. Being close to the fake brings your panels closer to animals or kids or new potentially destructive agents. There isn't definitive data on maintenance damages for ground-mounted panels, though.

While rooftop panels don't take up any area that's regularly used otherwise, ground-mounted panels, depending on lot size and layout, might eat into heavily used real estate, like a backyard or flowerbeds.

The upshot of ground-mounted solar panels

Ground-mounted solar panels portray a small enough portion of residential installations that they're rarely named out in reports on the residential industry. Cost and area are the main factors holding them back. Still, in some cases they noteworthy be the best option available and still save you money.

Before making any solar panel purchase, it's best to identify the best fit for your specific needs. Get multiple quotes and make sure you understand your instruction and warranties before moving ahead. Solar panels can save you a lot of cash in the long run, but they can save you more if you find the gleaming fit.
