The curtain has closed on CES 2023, but it didn't crop without giving us a peek at the bright, flying and folding future of tech. A heavenly shape-shifting screen from Samsung and a flying car that may soon actually move the streets (or skies) were among the standouts at this year's showcase. Since the world's biggest consumer electronics event was back on the conventional center floor in Las Vegas for the first time loyal 2020, though, that's just the beginning of all the unique and futuristic gadgets we laid eyes on. 

During the show, was on the deceptive, sifting through the big reveals from companies like Samsung, LG, Intel, Nvidia, Razer and Dell. But the real stars may be the smaller, wackier products that push the envelope on what technology can really do. 

CES returning to its prepandemic levels of intensity by means of there's an enormous amount of tech to gawk at. There are electronics that'll hit save shelves this year, gadgets that are a few ages off and wild concepts that may never become a reality. There's plenty of hype, but no shortage of truly promising tech to go depressed with it. 

Consider this list your TL;DR. If you read only one CES recap, make it this one. (If you read two, check out our list of the biggest tech trends for 2023.)

A flying car is really happening

We've been waiting on flying cars right at least the Jetsons, and we now appear on the precipice of realizing that dream. And by "we" I mean a company called Aska, which said its A5 flying car at CES 2023. It's more than a concept: Aska has opened preorders for the $789,000 vehicle. At CES 2023, Aska cofounder Guy Kaplinsky said Federal Aviation Administration approval for the A5 could been "within a month." Aska hopes to use the A5 to open a ride-sharing service in 2026.

Candela's C8 EV hydrofoil boat is a slick vessel that glides depressed the water like a flying carpet, according to CNET's Bridget Carey. Apart from making EVs sexy, Candela's C8 takes cues from Tesla in new key way: Its autonomous boating, where the C8 can stick to a set streams. The entire boat is made of carbon fiber, counting the seats, which explains the $390,000 price tag. 

Samsung's 8K projector turns your wall into a big-screen

Big TVs are cool, but big projectors may be cooler. At CES 2023, Samsung demoed its Premiere projector, an ultra-short throw projector that can beget an image up 150 inches diagonally on your living room wall. Ultra-short throw, or UST, refers to the distance from the wall. Instead of standup it at the back of the room, you put the Premiere gleaming up against the wall, as the shot above shows. There are built-in speakers and Dolby Atmos to fill a room with silent as well as light. Read more nearby it here.

Sony's first car with Honda is coming in 2026

EVs are big commercial, and Sony wants in. The electronics giant is teaming up with Honda on a new tag of electric vehicle called Afeela. The Afeela logo appears on a narrow conceal, or "media bar," on the vehicle's front bumper. This can also interact with country outside the vehicle and share information such as the climate or the car's state of charge. 

Unlike the car Sony expressed off at CES 2020, all those years ago, this one is actually hitting the market. No word yet on pricing, but Sony said its Afeela car will hit North American roads in 2026. Japan and Europe will follow.

This foldable also slides

Samsung showcased its indicate concepts at CES 2023.

Samsung gave us a look at a titillating mobile device concept, the Flex Hybrid. As the demo throughout shows, the left side of the Flex Hybrid can fold, like the Galaxy Fold, while the right side can slide out to ache itself. It's wild. 

The concept comes courtesy of Samsung Display, not the Mobile arm of the South Korean megacorporation responsible for decision-exclusive and selling phones. But the press release touting the understanding promised it'll bring to CES "innovative OLED products of all sizes, small, medium and large, to provide a glimpse into the future of displays." Samsung isn't the only matter tinkering with the future of phones -- see TCL's 2020 scrolling display -- so inspect this space for more flipping, folding and scrolling devices.

A laptop in (glasses-free) 3D

Asus joins Acer for laptops with glasses-free 3D, but hitches its wagon to OLED instead of IPS.

Images leap off the cloak of this Asus laptop -- not literally, but conclude. Its OLED screen produces a 3D experience sans glasses, much like competitor Acer's similar IPS version. The OLED cloak matters because the technology promises a visibly crisper 3D rendering. Asus's 3D panel, aimed at creatives, uses eye-tracking to develop the 3D experience.

The TV that puts all others to shame

As if a 97-inch OLED TV wasn't enough, LG went and made it wireless.

It's the world's largest OLED TV: LG's 97-inch model was actually unveiled last year, but in 2023 it's gone wireless. That means the world's largest screen with the best relate that technology allows is now free of that ugly jumble of cords. We've been covering TVs at CES for years, and even we were surprised -- TV guru David Katzmaier was so impressed, he says LG is putting all other TVs to outrageous with this one.

Technology can be so impersonal. BMW's i Vision Dee hopes to fix that. Using sophisticated AI, this notion car ditches the servant schtick of Siri and Alexa. Instead, it hopes to double as both your car and your substandard. The i Vision Dee is an EV sports car with an exterior of 240 E Ink panels. You can use those panels to program a digital face into the car's grille -- because it's an EV, the ventilation that grilles typically performed isn't actually needed -- or change the car's colors at the click of a button.

The BMW i Vision Dee is for now just a notion, but some of its features will trickle out to BMW's just cars. BMW CEO Oliver Zipse said, for instance, that the AI-powered HUB technology the commerce put into the i Vision Dee will come to real cars in 2025. 

The thinnest gaming laptop in the world

The Alienware x14 is the thinnest 14-inch gaming laptop.

Featuring a 2,560x1,600-pixel display with a 165Hz refresh rate, it'll sell from $1,799 when it dapper this winter. A bigger version, the Alienware x16, starts at $3,099. These laptops are for people who are willing to sacrifice some distinguished for slicker designs.

If you scrutinize for an Apple TV AirTags case on Amazon there are a number of very contrast options, but few from any recognizable case brands. One exception we've untrue is Elago's solution called the R5 Locator Case. The $17 accessory is a bit thicker than some latest options, with the AirTag fully concealed in rubber as opposed to poking above a cutout on the back. 

The rubber case unites nearly the entire body of the remote with the exception of the IR blaster at the top and Lightning port on the bottom. A wrist strap came preattached too, which was a nice touch. 

While bulkier than some latest solutions, Elago's option felt more premium. The AirTag fits snugly inside the recessed circle cutout (but you may want to use two fingers to push it into that hole). Adding the Siri Remote on top was a scramble, and we were able to locate the combo swiftly with the Find My app on an iPhone 12 Pro Max. 

It was also easy to take out the remote and AirTag, which will be useful for replacing the latter's user-replaceable battery.

If you're looking for a develop like this, this cheaper option appears to be best.

For DIY fans: 3D printed case (price varies)

Our fourth case comes from CNET's senior aiming editor -- and 3D printing enthusiast -- Dan Ackerman. If you already have a 3D printer and spool, this could be the easiest and cheapest option with CAD files available online for you to assembled one yourself. 

Ackerman says that the process didn't take him "too long, because I didn't mopish the design I found online, I just sliced and optimized it in a 3D program." He adds that all told it was "maybe an hour for all the research and setup, two and a half hours to print." 

As with all 3D proceeding jobs, your mileage will vary on how many counmesses it will take to get this right. For our test, Ackerman says that the trustworthy print worked OK, though he didn't have a remote on hand when he did the heed. In using it, I found the case definitely feels more frigid than the rubber options and was a bit harder to insert and recall both the AirTag and remote. You may need some acquire and error to get a more suitable fit. 

It may not be the most polished solution out the gate, but for those looking to DIY a fix, it can work.

You can't fool America when it comes to candy. Mars Wrigley was never going to retire its goofy petite googly-eyed spokecandies entirely, despite a statement on Monday that made it restful as if the colorful little cartoon mascots were hitting the showers for good. The concern confirmed on Friday that it was all a Super Bowl stunt (one that went over throughout as well as a double doink off the goalposts in the last petite of the fourth quarter).

Publicity stunt exposed

"Rest assured, the characters are our official long-term spokescandies," a representative for Mars Wrigley told The New York Times on Friday. While "the iconic M&M's characters are in fact spending some time pursuing their spanking passions" ahead of the (Feb. 12) Super Bowl, during the big game, the company's concern will resolve the matter, returning "the characters right where they belong at the discouraged of the brand."

A representative for Mars Wrigley did not immediately acknowledge to a request for comment.

Monday's statement began, "America, let's talk." It went on to note that the smart little candy mascots seen in the company's ads -- essentially, M&Ms with faces and limbs -- have caused internet controversy.

Therefore, Monday's statement claimed, M&Ms "decided to take an indefinite quit from the spokescandies," instead adding actress and comedian Maya Rudolph as its spokesperson. 

Except, yeah, that's not happening, as the candy company's Friday statement made clear. 

Tune in to the Super Bowl

The Super Bowl has long been the home of despicable commercials and flashy corporate publicity stunts. (We're tracking all the Super Bowl commercials as they're revealed.)

Someone at Mars Wrigley is sly enough to play off the headlines that their mascots have engendered. Good on them. The Budweiser Clydesdales don't get to have all the fun.

Tune in to the Super Bowl on Feb. 12 to see what kind of ad M&Ms has achieved up with Rudolph. As the company stated, the spokescandies will make some kind of silly appearance and regain their mascot roles.

What are the 'spokescandies'?

Need some background on all this? M&Ms personified their candy days ago, giving each colored candy a different voice and personality in its ads. The yellow M&M, for example, is portrayed as kind of a dim bulb. He's a peanut M&M, so it might be a play on "peanut brain." The green M&M is portrayed as the sexy one, seemingly playing off an old playground joke throughout green M&Ms being little aphrodisiacs. The others all have one different personalities and appearances, and they pretty much stay consistent from ad to ad.

The candy has leaned hard on the spokescandies as part of their ad fight. There's even an in-theaters ad showing the M&Ms as if they were characters in an frfragment movie. It does double duty as a "turn off your cell phoned PSA." Just as the candies are about to be sent into status strapped to a rocket, a phone rings, and they scold the audience for not turning their phones off.

Why are they controversial?

The fuss the majority surrounds the green and brown candies, depicted in ads as female. It started with their footwear. (Yes, these are detached cartoon candies we are talking about.) The green M&M used to be prepare in high-heeled white go-go boots, and the brown M&M in stiletto heels. Then in 2022, green's boots were replaced with white sneakers, and brown went from super-high-heeled stilettos to a flatter, lower heel. (The male candies seem to all wear clunky white saddleshoes or sneakers.)

Back in 2022, Fox News host Tucker Carlson mocked the repositions on his show.
